Professional Truck Driving Frequently Asked Questions
What courses are available?
There are two courses that comprise the program,, Professional Truck Driving I & II. Both courses are required to complete the program.
What will I learn?
After graduation from this program students will:
1. Be qualified to secure an entry-level job as an over-the-road driver with a Commercial Driver's License.
2. Aware of safety procedures; alcohol and drug effects; laws and penalties applicable to the professional driver.
3. Proficient at performing pre-trip, on the road, and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections and sliding fifth-wheels and tandems.
4. Skillful in safe driving techniques.
5. Capable of map reading, trip planning, maintaining a log book, cargo documentation, coupling and uncoulping, and will be aware of emergency responsibilities and regulations of transportation agencies.

This is the building on Hwy 59 directly across from the Marshall Mall. The driving range is north of the campus.
Is this a quality program?

What are the admission requirements?
Before registering at TSTC a student must meet these admission requirements.
1. Interview with the school admissions representative.
2. Desire to become an OTR driver.
3. Positive Attitude.
4. Must be able to pass a DOT Physical Exam and Drug Screen.
5. Minimum age of 21 years.
6. Must have a valid driver's license from student's resident state.
What are the requirements for D.O.T. Certification?
1.Be 21 years of age before residency completion.
2. Read and speak the English language well enough to converse with general public, to understand traffic signals, to respond to official inquiries, and to make entries on reports and records.
3. Have no current suspended driver's license in any state. Nor any unpaid traffic tickets in any state.
4. Not have been convicted of driving while intoxicated, driving under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs; leaving the scene of an accident which resulted in serious injury or death; or any felony offense involving the use of a motor vehicle within the last year for a first conviction or the last three years for a second conviction. (Company requirements may vary- call for details.)
5. Have no loss of foot, hand, or arm, unless a waiver has been granted pursuant to FMC5R 391.49.
6. Have no impairment of hand or finger, which interferes with pretension or power grasping.
7. Have no defects in arms, foot or leg, which interferes with the ability to perform normal tasks associated with operating a motor vehicle.
8. Have no current history or clinical diagnosis of diabetes requiring insulin.
9. Have no current clinical diagnosis of heart disease of a variety known to be accompanied by syncope, dyspnea, collapse, or congestive heart failure.
10. Have no history or clinical diagnosis of high blood pressure, or must be controlled by medication.
11. Have no respiratory dysfunction.
12. Have no clinical diagnosis of epilepsy.
13. Have acceptable eye and hearing acuity. Vision must be correctable to 20/40 for both eyes.
14. Have no clinical diagnosis for nervous, mental or psychiatric disorder.
15. Not use any narcotic or habit-forming drugs of any type.
16. Have no clinical diagnosis of alcoholism.
17. Have no rheumatic, arthritic, orthopedic, muscular, neuromuscular, or vascular disease, which interferes with the ability to control, and operate a motor vehicle safely.
18. Have no more than two moving violations in the last year or four in the past five years.
19. Hold no more than one valid driver's license.
20.Be able to pass D.O.T. physical examination.
What are the requirements for Licensing and D.O.T. Physical?
Included in the classroom training, International Schools will prepare you to take the General Knowledge, the Class A and B, Combination Vehicles and Air Brakes exams. We will also prepare you to take the Hazardous Materials, Tanker and Doubles and Triples endorsement exams. During the first week of class you will be required to take your D.O.T. Physical Exam and Drug Screen. The cost of the CDL Permit, D.O.T. Physical Drug Screen and CDL License are included in the course price. Note: There are no hidden costs. You will need a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, a Picture I.D. (must have for drug screen!), a Social Security Card. You must not have any outstanding tickets or warrants.
How do I enroll in a class?
After meeting pre-qualifying requirements.

For in person registration please see Pat Robins at TSTC Marshall's Admissions Office. Students will be enrolled on a first come first serve basis. Online Registration is also available here.
Will I be a TSTC Student?
Yes. You will be a registered TSTC continuing education student. All registered TSTC continuing education students completing courses or programs receive an official TSTC Continuing Education Certificate of Completion, which includes the title of the course completed and the number of CEUs (Continuing Education Units) completed. Additionally, TSTC Continuing Education students are transcripted and on permanent record at the college. However, continuing education units are not "credit" bearing and do not contribute toward a college degree.
What are the costs?
The tuition is $3,800 plus a fee of $150. This cost is non-refundable and required prior to the class session to reserve your place in the class. A student who does not show up for class, or who leaves during any part of the class for any reason, forfeits their entire fee and must pay the full fee again to reschedule another class.
What is the course schedule?
The course typically meets M-F, 10 hours a day for 4 weeks.
How do I pay?
Payment is accepted at TSTC Marshall at the Cashier's office in the Administration Building. After you are officially registered and in the database system at TSTC, you also have the option to call the TSTC Cashier's office at 903-923-3237 with your credit card information. Qualifying student may be eligible for financial support through WIA funds at the local Workforce Center.
What kind of trucks will I be driving in class?
Industry standard late model conventional tractors pulling forty-eight foot dry vans.
Will I have assistance in finding a job?
Placement assistance is actually part of the college training partner's (International Schools) Admissions process. Some students are pre-hired by trucking companies before completing the course. "Employability" is the key ingredient in the screening of individuals for possible employment as "over-the-road" truck drivers.
